A completely Average Guy trying very hard to be a Renaissance Man

One has to look at this recent Al Franken episode with a twinge of skepticism. Would someone of Franken's ability to pay a hefty assault settlement really put himself in a situation where he (potentially) physically harmed someone, and then repeatedly and publicly admit it?

Even the ill-tempered Sean Penn-types of the celebrity world don't comment on their wannabe bravado for fear of buying their bruised victims a summer home settlement. The real proof in the pudding will be if Al finally gets served with a civil lawsuit with a lot of zeros.

No, folks, this smacks of Andy Kaufman-esque publicity garnering. Al has new program coming out and what better than having a scuffle with a paid lackey within close proximity of dozens of nationally-tuned cameras? Like many B-grade comedians before him, he has to re-work old routines and material rather than coming up with something original.

I buy the set-up theory a lot more than his explaination that he is just for people's freedom to be heard. I have heard him speak over others on TV plenty of times and I would bet good money that he wouldn't do the same to a heckler at a pro-Bush rally. Had to have been a publicity stunt.

I hope the victim of Al Qaida Franken's cowardly sneak attack hits him with a huge lawsuit.

Franken's irreverance doesn't warrant blog space, but neither does Dennis Miller's.

Stuart Smalley wasn't original. ARE YOU CRAZY!?!

I have to argree with the "staged" theory also. When I first read about it my very first thought was why the headline didn't read, "Frankin arrested on assuault charge", I just wish his wrestling "self" would have tackled my Martial Arts Grappling "self", the headline would have been different indeed. Not that I'm a concervative or anything, you just don't do that to people without certain provocation.

I understand your desire to mix it up, but you'll consider yourself lucky if you'll never have to use those skill outside of the mat/ring/dojo, my friend. A simple spin of the Wheel of Crappy Karma and you get some freako judge who thinks that because you're a trained fighter gives you no right...even to all the evidence of self-defense...to use your skills.

aegix, your point is well taken. I spent 4 yrs to reach my top level only to realize that should I ever have to use it , that I would be defending myself in court as if I had drawn a gun on someone. I really don't have a desire to mix it with someone in that type of situation though, I was content to compete in tournaments. That, I guess is what bugged me about the Frankin incident, he brought his wrestling training up in a kinda bragadocious way. I was taught to keep it private, unless needed. My point was that he was just lucky, if it was a stranger, or that it was staged. Again, your point is well taken though, and I agree.

Of course even if it wasn't staged, Franken could afford to pay off the man he tackled and thus avoid any legal action

Ah, you're pre-supposing that money soothes all wounds, aren't you? Of course, you're likely right. Most people tend to forget all sorts of physical injury or emotional duress when enough of the green stuff is thrown around.

But, let's think about this. Let's say there is no collusion between ALF and this heckler. A true heckler wants attention, either for his cause/candidate or for himself...a blowhard, if you will. Why give up such an opportune situation when you have the possiblity of getting your God-given 15 minutes on the national stage? Why not show up in front of a few cameras with a neck brace and a facial contusion or two? In the very least, you have an expensive-looking attorney do the talking head thing on CNN or MSNBC at 3AM, just to make sure there's an adequate number of zeros on that "Hey, everything's cool" check you're gonna get, right? *ANYBODY* who has picked a fight with a celebrity at the Viper Room or the Key Club on Sunset knows that.

In the very least, this guy hasn't shown up on Howard Stern.

Nah, you know I'm right.

"aegix, your point is well taken"

Nah, I'm not here to be the Wise Man on the Mountain. I'm not telling you anything a good instructor hasn't already drilled into your head: "Kid, if you take this stuff on the street, make sure you're life is in danger or else you're gonna be cooling your heels in County for a short stint."

I knew a good submission fighter trying to make it into the pro-wrestling ranks. And--no shit--the day he got a contract offer from the WWE, he was arrested for taking out a guy who FOLLOWED HIM OFF THE FREEWAY TO A GAS STATION AND PUNCHED HIM THREE TIMES. The fighter didn't even hit the guy, but put him in an arm bar and had someone call the cops. The judge determined that because the fighter was trained that he should have shown more restraint.

But no, captain, this isn't some sort of "take the pebble from my hand, Grasshopper" lesson. If I'm tackled by a complete stranger, I'm with you, there's a whole lot more than a pair of glasses that's going to be broken. And if there's any sort of sympathy mongering from the ALF camp, I'd be unleashing with my very own line of T-Shirts that read, "I Kicked Stuart Smalley's Ass And Doggone It, People Like Me"
